What traffic sources convert best for digital banking app promotions?

I’ve been curious about something lately while working on a small campaign for a finance app. When it comes to digital banking app promotions, everyone seems to have a different opinion about which traffic source actually converts. Some people swear by social traffic, others say push notifications are better, and a few recommend search ads. It got me wondering what really works in practice.

The main challenge I ran into was simple: getting installs is one thing, but getting users who actually open the app and complete actions is a totally different story. A lot of traffic sources looked good on paper. High clicks, decent install numbers, and plenty of impressions. But when I checked the deeper metrics, like sign-ups or first transactions, the results were mixed.

At first, I tried social media traffic because it seemed like the easiest way to reach a big audience quickly. It definitely brought volume, but the engagement wasn’t always great. Many users installed the app but didn’t really use it after that. Maybe they were just curious or clicked impulsively.

Then I experimented with push notification traffic. Surprisingly, this worked better than I expected. The audience seemed more responsive, probably because they were already used to interacting with notifications. The installs were lower compared to social traffic, but the engagement rate improved. Some users actually completed onboarding, which felt like real progress.

Another thing I noticed was that niche ad networks focused on finance audiences sometimes performed better than broad platforms. The targeting felt a bit more aligned with people who are already interested in banking tools or money management apps. While researching different options, I came across a guide about digital banking app promotions here.

It helped me understand how finance related ad traffic is usually structured and why certain sources might work better for banking apps compared to regular mobile campaigns.

One thing I’m still learning is that there probably isn’t a single “best” traffic source. It seems more like a combination approach works best. For example, social traffic for awareness, push ads for engagement, and maybe search ads for people who are actively looking for banking solutions.

If anyone else here has tested campaigns for finance apps, I’d honestly love to hear what worked for you. Did certain traffic sources bring better long-term users, or was it mostly trial and error like my experience so far?
